Lid nystagmus evoked by ocular convergence: an ocular electromyographic study.

چکیده
In 1916 Pick described a nystagmus-like movement of the upper eyelids in a young woman with a slowly progressive neurological disease characterized by pseudobulbar and cerebellar signs. Her lids were motionless as she looked in the distance but, as she focused on an approaching object, they jerked up and down in rhythmic motions that increased as convergence increased. The lids also elevated in irregular step-like jerks as she followed an upward moving object. Gaze-evoked ocular nystagmus was present but Pick stressed that the lid 'nystagmus' was a separate motor phenomenon, related particularly to convergence. There have been no further reports of this sign, which suggests that it is either extremely rare or difficult to recognize. The present report describes a case of lid nystagmus conforming to Pick's description and includes ocular electromyographic studies.

Gaze-evoked eyelid and ocular nystagmus inhibited by the near reflex: unusual ocular motor phenomena in a lateral medullary syndrome.
Rhythmic movements of the upper eyelids are infrequent manifestations of brain-stem disease. Gowers (1879) noted the close coordination between movements of the upper lids and eyeballs in vertical nystagmus. He attributed this coordinated movement to the natural synkinesis of the levator palpebrae superioris and superior rectus muscles; this clinical observation was later verified electrophysio...
متن کاملPersistent ocular motor manifestations and related visual consequences in multiple sclerosis.
Abnormal eye movements in multiple sclerosis (MS) are often persistent and known to be associated with general disability. However, there is no precise knowledge concerning their incidence and resulting visual handicap. The aim of our study was to describe the persistent ocular motor manifestations in MS and relate them to visual functions tested with visual acuity and with a vision-related que...
متن کاملThe Effect of Cognitive Tasks on the Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Healthy People
Introduction: The majority of the daily life activities involve the concurrent performance of simultaneously challenging motor and cognitive activities, such as talking while walking, which requires the vestibular system for balance. Functional balance allows the brain to interpret and integrate the sensory information from our physical and social environment. This study aimed to investig...
متن کاملGravity dependence of ocular drift in patients with cerebellar downbeat nystagmus.
Downbeat nystagmus is a frequent ocular motor sign in patients with lesions of the vestibulocerebellum. The upward drift in downbeat nystagmus is a combination of a gaze-evoked drift, due to an impaired vertical neural integrator, and a velocity bias. Using a three-dimensional turntable, we analyzed the influence of gravity on these two mechanisms. Patients with cerebellar downbeat nystagmus (n...
